In the six grade I auditioned for The Music Man Junior. I got the part of Mayor Shinn. It was a role that fit like a glove because I was already somewhat pompous and loud. I had a blast doing it and performing it twice in my suit and top hat.
Every year I'm in at least seven orchestra concerts. Add that to several weddings, tea parties, and gatherings of Swedes and I'm used to being on show. I'm actually the only extravert in my family so it's nice to have an outlet into which I can channel my energy.
Finally, last year I played in the pit orchesta for The Wizard of Oz and had a blast. So this year I decided to give the play a go. The audition was yesterday. The play is an adaptation of "Its a Wonderful Life." I only got nervous once I sat in the circle with the rest of my fellow auditioners. I wanted a somewhat significant part and was going against a LOT of very good, experienced guys.
We were asked to read through a few scenes from the play. I thought I did my best at Mr. Potter and Pop. I was shooting for Mr. Potter because it would be challenging for me. I thought thaty George Bailey was lacking. The most fun was the improv. The director called up four guys. He asked me to teach him how to knit in 15 seconds. Then he told me to act like I'm getting ready to be in a swimming meet. I could tell that I did pretty well because everyone was laughing. It felt really good.
The results were posted during the last hour of school. Needless to say I was pretty giddy. So I went with my best friend who also tried out. By my name was "George Bailey." I think my heart must have stopped or something. Oh my gosh. I still think that it was a mistake, but I'm excited. It will be a lot of lines to memorize but I think I can do it.
